SWIFTLET bird's nest farmers want Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to intervene and resolve their longstanding problem over the export of bird's nest to China.
More than 70 farmers gathered at Seberang Prai Municipal Council field, yesterday, demanding that the government call off the signing of the protocol of entry between Malaysia and China in Naning, China, on Sept 19. They claimed the protocol, including the requirement of the mechanism of traceability by China and the requirement imposed by our government to export the bird's nest to China would kill the industry which brought more than RM2 billion revenue to the country.
United Front of Malaysian Bird's Nest Industries Association coordinator David Lim said members, who operate more than 70,000 bird's nest houses in the country, want the government to disclose the contents of the protocol. "The livelihood of more than 100,000 people will be by the signing, in addition to those in related industries."
"We want Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Minister Datuk Seri Noh Omar to meet us before the signing because we feel it will kill the industry, especially the small players," he said.
Lim claimed that the requirement imposed by the government would allow external bodies and certain groups to monopolies the industry.
"Small players will suffer a slow death due to the high fees imposed by agents to operate the business."Only major players will be able to survive. What we want is the freedom for individual farmers to export their products directly to China without going through the 15 government appointed agencies," he said.
Representatives from Kedah, Perak, Terengganu, Pahang, Selangor, Sabah and Sarawak were also present at the gathering. Datuk Ng Siew Lai, the advisor to the association and the Penang Gerakan Wanita Chief, said the prime minister should intervene immediately to resolve the problem as the prolonged issue has affected the livelihood of thousands of families involved in the industry. She said many farmers were faced with financial difficulties after the introduction of the new requirement and China's RFID tags condition in July, last year. Noh had on Friday said that China's General Administration on Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine accepted Malaysia's request for the removal of the mandatory requirement of radio frequency identification tags on bird's nest, following protest from the associations.
